What's new in Screen
Every shipped release, newest first. The Mac app updates itself — you'll always be on the latest.
- FixedPressing the window-recording shortcut twice in quick succession (easy to do on the first recording after launch, when the window list takes a moment) could leave an invisible picker overlay over the live recording that blocked the menu-bar icon until you pressed Esc.
- FixedTurning draw mode off no longer flashes the pen cursor for a moment before the normal pointer returns.
- FixedIn draw mode the pointer is now always the normal arrow while it's over the recording controls, and the pen everywhere else — it no longer flashes the pen when you click Draw, or gets stuck as the pen inside the menu.
- FixedThe window picker (and mid-recording window switch) now selects the window actually under your cursor. When windows overlapped it could pick the one behind.
- FixedLeaving draw mode by clicking the Draw button restores the normal pointer — the pen cursor no longer sticks around.
- FixedAfter a normal recording, the menu could briefly show "1 recording waiting to upload" (and the upload glyph in the menu bar) for a minute or two even though nothing was waiting. The count now ignores the recording in progress and clears the moment processing finishes.
Recordings survive outages
- NewA recording never fails because the server is unreachable. Every segment is kept on your Mac until Screen confirms it has it — if the service is down, restarting, or you lose Wi‑Fi mid-recording, capture keeps going and the upload finishes automatically when the connection is back.
- NewRecordings waiting to upload show in the menu (with Retry now, Show files, and Discard) and as an upload glyph in the menu bar. If you quit or the app crashes mid-recording, it picks up where it left off on the next launch.
- NewKeep a local copy of recordings (Preferences → General): after processing, the finished video is also saved to ~/Movies/Screen and cleaned up after 7, 30, or 90 days — or kept forever.
- ImprovedThe menu warns before you record if the Screen service is degraded or your Mac is offline — and explains that the recording will be saved locally and uploaded later.
- ImprovedLive transcription reconnects for as long as the recording runs instead of giving up after a short outage; the audio is always safe in the video.
- ImprovedFailures are now told to you. A recording that stops unexpectedly, or one that's waiting for the service, posts a notification instead of silently looking like it worked.
- FixedImporting a video larger than 64 MB now explains the limit up front instead of failing after a full upload.
- FixedClicking away from the menu now always closes it — previously, after opening the ⋯ menu or a picker, the menu could get stuck open (just dimming instead of closing).
- FixedStarting a recording with a hotkey while one of the menu's pickers was open no longer freezes the app's menus until relaunch.
- ImprovedThe copied-to-clipboard alert now arrives ~2–3 seconds after you stop, instead of waiting on video processing.
One alert, at the right moment
- ImprovedThe notification now fires the moment your share summary is on the clipboard — seconds after you stop. Video processing finishes silently in the background.
- ImprovedOpening a recording whose video is still processing now says so — and shows the transcript and frames, which are already live.
- ImprovedThe draw cursor is now a proper little red pencil — easy to spot on any background, and the ink starts exactly at its tip.
Copy first, stitch later
- ImprovedThe share summary hits your clipboard the moment you stop recording — no more waiting for the video to finish processing. The ready alert still tells you when the video is watchable.
- FixedThe pen cursor now truly stays a pen while drawing (and turns back into a pointer over the recording controls).
- FixedEscape reliably exits draw mode even when another app was frontmost.
- FixedIf the ready alert can't be shown (notifications denied or a fetch fails), the app now says why in the log instead of failing silently.
Drawing that behaves
- FixedThe recording controls now stay clickable while draw mode is on — the Draw button toggles off with a click instead of leaving a stray dot on screen.
- FixedThe pen cursor now stays a pen for the whole draw session instead of flickering back to the normal pointer.
- FixedA click without movement no longer creates a tiny dot annotation.
- ImprovedRecordings finalize faster — the server reuses the video it already received instead of re-fetching it from storage.
Instant frames
- NewAgents can now see frames from a recording while it's still in progress — the share link's frame URLs work live, not just after you stop.
- ImprovedRecordings are ready much sooner after you stop. Frames are captured on your Mac as you record, so the server no longer spends minutes processing video at the end.
- ImprovedDrawn annotations still appear in shared frames exactly as before — they're added when the recording wraps up.
- ImprovedThe 3-2-1 countdown before a recording is now off by default — recordings start right away. Turn it back on in Preferences → General.
- FixedStarting a recording with the countdown off now closes the menu immediately, and no longer leaves the menu's mic level meter holding the microphone for the whole recording.
- ImprovedClicking the menu bar icon while the recording controls are floating now brings that window right under the icon, instead of appearing to do nothing.
- ImprovedRecording a single window now draws a clean outline around its edge — no more blue tint pulsing over the window's content.
A cleaner recording menu
- ImprovedThe recording menu is transcript-first: your words up top, notes below, and Pause / Stop / Discard always in the same spot at the bottom.
- ImprovedA subtle pulsing ellipsis at the end of the transcript shows Screen is still listening — no more timer and red dot taking up space.
- FixedAn automatic update will never restart the app in the middle of a recording — installs wait until you're done.
- FixedSigning in to a development build no longer signs the released app out of your real account.
Live transcript
- NewThe recording controls now show the full live transcript as you speak — a scrollable panel that follows along, and pauses while you're reading back.
- NewNotes, files, and snapshots appear as pills right where they were added in the transcript — click one to preview or remove it.
- NewWhen a recording starts, the controls break away into a small floating window in the top-right corner, so Pause and Stop stay in reach. Drag it anywhere — it remembers its spot — and it never appears in the recording. Turn it off in Preferences → General.
- ImprovedCountdown beeps before a recording are reliable, and recordings start more smoothly.
- ImprovedA recording in progress is never interrupted by your monthly limit — even on the free plan, you can finish what you're recording, up to a 5-hour session.
- FixedThe web app and the Mac menu now report the same monthly usage — a rounding difference made the same minutes read differently in each.
- NewSign out of the web app from Settings.
- ImprovedOn paid plans the menu's usage row stays out of the way until you're within 10% of your cap. Free plans still always show it.
